What do carbon, ceramic rings and bio balls do?
Carbon helps remove some dissolved impurities and odors. Ceramic rings and bio balls give beneficial bacteria surface area for biological filtration.
How often should I replace filter media?
Rinse biological media gently in used tank water, never tap water, when flow slows. Carbon stops working after a few weeks and is usually replaced on a regular schedule.
Is more media always better?
Not necessarily. Water must flow through the media, so fit it inside the filter as the manufacturer intends.
