How to Cycle a Fish Tank: The Nitrogen Cycle Explained Simply

Cycling a fish tank means growing the beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia from fish waste into nitrite, then into relatively harmless nitrate. A fishless cycle takes 4–6 weeks, and it is the single most important thing you can do for fish health — the majority of “mystery” fish diseases trace back to tanks that were never fully cycled.

The nitrogen cycle in 60 seconds

Fish waste and uneaten food release ammonia, which burns gills and stresses fish even at low levels. One family of bacteria converts ammonia to nitrite (also toxic), and a second converts nitrite to nitrate, which is safe until it accumulates and is removed with water changes. Those bacteria live in your filter media — not in the water — which is why a mature filter is your tank’s immune system.

Fishless cycling, step by step

  1. Set up the tank with the filter and heater running (78–80°F speeds bacterial growth).
  2. Add an ammonia source — pure ammonia to 2–4 ppm, or a pinch of fish food daily.
  3. Test every 1–2 days with a liquid test kit. First you’ll see ammonia fall and nitrite rise; then nitrite falls as nitrate appears.
  4. Keep dosing ammonia back to ~2 ppm whenever it drops, to keep feeding the growing colony.
  5. You’re cycled when the tank clears 2 ppm of ammonia to 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite within 24 hours. Do a large water change to drop nitrates, then add fish gradually — a few at a time, so the colony can catch up.

Common cycling mistakes

  • Adding fish on day one. They live in rising ammonia; survivors often develop fin and skin infections weeks later (see our fin rot guide).
  • Washing filter media in tap water. Chlorine kills the colony. Rinse media in removed tank water only.
  • Replacing all filter media at once. You throw away the colony — swap media in stages.

Why cycling prevents disease

Chronic low-level ammonia is the most common stressor behind bacterial outbreaks — fin rot, mouth rot, ulcers and hole-in-the-head disease all hit stressed fish first. A cycled, stable tank prevents most of the problems that would otherwise need treatment from our fish antibiotics range.
